Fresh Musikk: 2012 Announcement

* Please join us at our NEW host site; Same name, same URL, but we will not be updating Fresh Musikk through tumblr anymore. www.FreshMusikk.com

I imagine this is what it feels like to be a proud parent; Seeing your kindergartener step on the school bus for the first time; Looking stunning and all grown up while leaving the house for prom; Or walking across the stage at college graduation, making that huge step towards the transition between student to adult- much like the journey we are about to embark on with Fresh Musikk.

We are leaping across that stage, striving to become what we know we’re capable of…

Much like life, Fresh Musikk had some growing pains, some teenage angst, and a hell of a lot of issues to deal with while building the new site. And while we still have a few bumps and bruises to work through, we could not be happier with what we’ve become.

Fresh Musikk is just one of thousands of music blogs, but there’s one thing that makes us different, and the thing that I’m most proud of- we don’t just give you the newest music, we provide you with music that represents all those emotions you yearn to describe. Music is a personal connection that no one can take away from you.

To say that FM opened the door to a host of new opportunities would be a huge understatement; I’ve been exposed to the behind the scene workings of an industry I knew little about, was able to connect to a ton of new people, and made some truly great friends along the way. I’ve explored and grown my musical taste, and developed an even deeper passion for writing by using this site as an outlet for something that can make anyone truly happy: music. Ahem, musikk.

I hope you enjoy the new and improved FM, and I appreciate your patience while we continue to import and fix older posts that were messed up in the transfer. Thank you for all your freshness, and I hope you share in this proud moment knowing that you have lent your support from the start.

Jamming, vibing, and swearing my way through the blog world,

k.roth and the FM fam

I also want to send out a massive ‘thank you’ to MAG over at Enthuzed for dealing with my frantic phone calls, panicked emails, and frustrated texts, while he coded the site - this literally would not have been possible without you.

Instead of having Jamie Teleport 2 Me, I’d prefer if I could teleport to HBO - then I could convince them to bring back HTMIIA.
For real - what were they thinking?!
Anyways, Kid Cudi gives us the full length version of “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie”, a song which ventures away from his typical sound, and reinvents his new image with WZRD; It took me four listens of the snippet for me to go from ‘disliking’ it to hitting ‘repeat’. I’m definitely curious to see how the album turns out, which drops on 2/28.

$10 to anyone who recognizes the slight sample to the intro song “Echo Boom”…

Any guesses?

I could be wrong (and I don’t think I am), but when I gave this a listen yesterday, my man, Marvin Gaye, immediately jumped out to me. Do you hear this?
Not a bad way for Cris Cab to start off his new mixtape, Echo Boom; The all original, 12 song EP incorporates Cab’s soulful blend of pop, reggae, and even a little dubstep inspired beats. You’ll see features from Pharrell, and Wyclef, and some serious throwbacks with Shaggy and Marc Roberge from OAR.
The mellow tape reflects Cab’s signature sound but also proves his growth as a young artist; He is truly filled to the brim with talent, and has surrounded himself with an impressive team of mentors through the Billionaire Boys Club. He explores young love, hope, and his dreams - things everyone can relate to in this star crossed lovers world of ours.
“Rihanna’s Gun” still remains an impressive track on the project, as well as “Cross Your Fingers”, and “Echo Boom”. This project will propel Cab to the big leagues, and you can be damn sure you’ll see this future heartthrob’s name, all over your younger sister’s notebook…

The massive track, “In My Mind” is set to be one of the biggest songs of 2012; Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl joined Axwell of Swedish House Mafia, at their legendary MSG show in December, and it was dubbed by many to be one of the biggest tracks of the night. The official release of the track was just released on Beatport today, and reminds us all how incredible this progressive electro beat is, combined with indie pop vocals from Georgi Kay; This infectious song is on track to be the next “Levels” - watch out world.

Music Video Monday

As if Florence Welch’s voice wasn’t angelic enough, she actually looks like an angel with the effervescent light creating a halo effect throughout her performance; Florence & The Machine released simple but powerful visuals for their song, “Lover to Lover” which focus solely on Flo’s powerful vocals. Not a bad way to wake up this Monday morning…

You go Flo!

 Logic - “Young Sinatra III”

Something smooth right here to ease you into the weekend:

This one comes from 22-year-old Maryland emcee, Logic. Young Sinatra’s III’s jazz-infused beat (an instrumental of Milkbone’s “Keep It Real”) is the definition of chill and provides the perfect foundation for Logic to lay down his verses.

The two things that really stick out to me after giving Young Sinatra III a couple listens are Logic’s exceptional lyricism and his unique flow. Logic drops strong lines throughout the track and is able to effortlessly alternate his flow and delivery.

Logic’s style is much closer to classic hip hop than the frat rap or hip pop that seems to be everywhere these days. It’s different than a lot of the music usually featured on this blog, but I have no problem declaring that Logic’s Young Sinatra III is some Fresh Musikk.

“Lunar Lovers”, Finally Boys

“Do me wrong…Do me wrong.”

Now depending on what kind of mood I’m in, that can be interpreted in two ways…

Finally Boys creates an airy, otherworldly sound that emanates the pulse of a heartbeat. Yea- let that sink in for a moment.

It reaches down deep and reflects intense emotions that have a transcendent, and powerful vibe; Interestingly enough, it can be translated as an uplifting song filled with love, or a saddened heartbreak. Give it a listen, and you make the call…

Holy Hot Sauce, and Happy Friday!

VAVA Voom tickets went on sale approximately an hour ago and I can say I’m one of the lucky few who got tickets for HOB Boston before the site crashed. HELL. YES.

Bassnectar released a Fall Tour Recap video which only adds to the hype for the spring tour three months early; For those of you who have been to one of his shows, watch this to bring back that feeling of euphoric, neon bliss - To everyone who hasn’t, this will convince you to scour the internet for tickets.

Skeleton EP, Terence Ryan
Terence Ryan: You are quickly becoming my new favorite person.

After my completely deserved, over-the-moon review of “Alan’s Right” earlier this week, I downloaded his new Skeleton EP the moment it was released yesterday; I took my time listening to each track, and after giving it a solid 3 or 4 go arounds, I can easily say this is one of the best projects we will see in 2012 from a newcomer; Mainly because, this is presented on such a level that you’d think this kid is a seasoned veteran.

The entire EP flows from one track to the next, creating a cohesive sound, and an edgy & serious tone that reflects each track’s power; Like “Alan’s Right”, each song was written, produced, recorded, and engineered by this 19 year old Massachusetts native - an incredible achievement when it results in quality songs like this.

You’ll find hip hop, indie, pop, and what I consider to be “Irish” musical elements incorporated throughout this sound track, keeping you completely involved in each new sound that sings along with his lyrics; He reminds me of a combination of M83, OnCue, and his own special quality, all wrapped up in a ball of talent.

Damn. Cris Cab’s slinging some Miami heat with this one…

This is one of the most interesting releases from Echo Boom that we’ve seen yet; “Rihanna’s Gun” is heavy on the reggae, over an edgy dubstep beat. The reggae inspired vocals remind me of Cab’s earlier cover tracks when he infused more of this genre, such as “All Of The Lights”, and “Black and Yellow”.
Cris recruits some heavy hitters again with features from Mavado & Wyclef, and the production handled by Wyclef and Sedeck Jean as well; We’re edging closer to the his mixtape’s release date of 1/31, which will be presented by Billionaire Boys Club.
I haven’t decided yet if this is my favorite single off of it so far - but nonetheless it catches your attention.

“These are the roses, I picked them from your garden. I’m begging for your parden, please take me back in the morning.”

Sometimes I feel like I come across songs that were made for me; Everyone’s had those days when you’re feeling lost, in love, confident, sad, or any other emotion, and song after song comes on that perfectly reflects your mood. Now before I go off on a tangent, let’s just cop it up to some cosmic shit that I can’t explain…

Love Thy Brother took an incredibly emotional and tormented song by Daughter called “Youth”, and gave it the lovestep treatment. While the original is chilling and just beautifully sad - This Canadian duo strived to empower it with a passionate but still an exciting youth-like feeling…
“Instead of angst give it that dreamy quality of a wild but happy youth — the teen years right before that moment when the cynicism of your twenties kicks in.” (via earmilk)

After a crazy work week, I needed a hot jam to get me through the rest of the week and damn, this gets it done. I feel sexier just listening to this song and I LOVE this slightly different sound from John Legend. His new single, “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” ft Luda will be featured in the upcoming movie “Think Like a Man,’ starring Chris Brown and based on Steve Harvey’s book “Act like a Lady, Think Like A Man”.

On his new track, Legend croons “I don’t want to brag but I’ll be the best you ever had.” and I can’t imagine he’s lying ladies. Chrissy Teigen is one lucky lady. Keep your ears open for his fourth album, set to drop this spring.

Enjoy.

Throwback Thursday

Last week I was reminded of how many crazy, absurd things I used to have to do for swimming; Looking back on the intensity of our training level, and the torture that our bodies could physically endure, I truly have no idea how I did it for so long.

Passion can be an incredibly strong force that leads you away from what’s logical, and allows you to strive for an otherwise out of sight, end goal; A feeling that the majority of our featured artists, young professionals, athletes, and many of you, feel day in and day out.

I was completely dedicated to swimming all through high school- and while I had my ups and downs in college, I’m glad I persevered and saw it through. Maino’s, “All The Above,” a radio ready rap track, completely leveled me before my races at ACC’s my junior year of college. Surprisingly, I never, ever, listened to music as a pre-race strategy; I preferred to calm myself and clear my mind, so that I would ‘just go’. No thinking necessary.
But this track proved to have a similar effect - an energy that left me feeling powerful and ready to give it everything I had.

What’s your passion?

I’m a big fan of Brenton Duvall; He always picks really interesting songs to remix and has a signature style that I can vibe with. I was surprised that it took me a few listens for me to fall in with this one, but it grew on me. His “Ass Back Home” remix falls under that same mellow, head bobbing beat that we’re used to, and is an easy listen this humpday.

Brenton has definitely taken a liking to Ms. Neon Hitch, who is the original singer of “Ass Back Home” (before it was remixed by Gym Class Heroes); One of my favorite pieces of production from Duvall is “Silly Girl”, another Hitch track, which is remixed with Wiz Khalifa. Check out both, below.

Have you ever been listening to the radio when a song comes on and reminds you of a specific memory, and brings you back to that place? It has always amazed us that one lyric, one beat, or one song can make us instantly think of a person, place, or experience that we’ll always remember. We all have songs that remind us of a person we love, a person we lost, someone who broke our hearts, someone who made us laugh, and memories that were created wrapped up in the soul of that song. The purpose of our blog is to deliver the freshest new songs and artists that will hopefully remind you of a specific memory one day, as well as bring back some old school beats that will always be classic. You’ll mostly see new “up and comer’s”, or new tracks from established musicians. You can agree, disagree, love us, hate us, but we simply created this because we are passionate about music, and unlike a lot of uncertainties in life, music will always be there. Feel free to comment, enjoy! Peace, KR Squared Follow @FreshMusikk
