Hoodie Allen got friendly with the ‘LA locals’ (that may be an oxymoron, because who really is from LA) to shoot his video on the streets of Hollywood and the ever popular video spot at the Venice Beach boardwalk.

“James Franco” is from Hoodie’s wildly successful mixtape, Leap Year, and the video is lighthearted and pokes fun at Franco throughout. As always, you see some interesting characters roaming the boardwalk, and the big, James Franco head, superimposed on them simply adds to the humor.

Leap Year was a great project - and although I liked his video for “The Chase Is On” more, I think he has the potential to deliver some fresh videos with other tracks from the tape.

Koncerts: Hoodie Allen & Aer, The Middle East, 8.17.11

Oh baby.
It was AWESOME to see so many people come out to the show last week, and in the words of Hoodie..

The venue was packed, and the show was tremendously supported by Otis Heat, Fortune Family, and Aer, who successfully got the crowd pumped up for Steven Markowitz’s headlining act. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the crowd consisted of a pretty equal mix of kids who were still in high school, as well as 21+. Both sides of the bar were packed, and The Middle East hugely underestimated the size of the crowd by only putting one bartender on duty (amidst other things, they are on my shit list).
Having recently joined Aer’s team, and becoming a part of the FAM, I felt a certain amount of pride to see how far they’ve come since they last played Boston back in June: It was incomparable. When Aer took the stage, their high energy and enthusiasm was mirrored from the crowd as they sang back every word, to every lyric; I was genuinely worried that ‘Purple Hat Kid’ in particular, was going to have an asthma attack from too much excitement and bouncing. They played two new tracks, including one where they go in over an Avicii beat, and solidified their presence as a leader in this mellow/acoustic, hip hop nouveau genre. Hoodie Allen may have been the main act, but it would be naive to say that Aer didn’t win over a hell of a lotta new fans that night. MA people, show some love to your local boys.

‘UPenn alum’, ‘former Googler’, and ‘emerging hip hop star’ are all phrases that you’ve seen associated with Hoodie Allen; But once you see him live, you’ll be so caught up in the music and the show that the only acceptable phrase for him would be, ‘undeniably impressive.’ Going into the show I was a fan; I really enjoyed Pep Rally, and enjoyed Leap Year even more. I went with friends who were major fans, and others who hadn’t heard of him until that morning. When we walked out of there, he left every single person a little bit shell shocked and most definitely wanting more. I have never seen an “up and comer” who had the crowd going so hard; People were rockin out like we were at a Jay Z concert. For real. At one point everyone was bumping the air so intensely that it was a unified movement among hundreds of people who were interested in nothing else but the music… for that one solitary moment.

I truly enjoy what Hoodie Allen has to offer; And although we’ve already seen a lot of growth from Hoodie, I’m not here to claim that it’s revolutionary - but I can guarantee that he shocked a lot of people that night with his talent, and more importantly his dedication and passion. His genuine gratitude reminds me of the way MGK acts with his fans; They make sure every last person gets an autograph and photo after the show- they go above and beyond. By allowing the fans to experience the sweet triumphs of success throughout the journey, you’re not only creating a fanbase, you’re creating a family.

And a family will always stand by your side.

If you are a fellow Beantown resident, I have two amazing reasons for you to start your weekend early this week…

Hoodie Allen and Aer will be performing this Wednesday, August 17th, at The Middle East Downstairs, accompanied by Fortune Family and Otis Heat. Now I’m sure majority of you have already downloaded Hoodie’s latest mixtape, “Leap Year”, which got stellar reviews (from myself included), but if not, you definitely have to download it here!
After having a wildly successful sold out show with Cam Meekins in NYC last week, Aer is bringing it back to rock the stage in their hometown state- Grab your tickets quick, because it’s sure to sell out soon!

For anyone who has been reading Fresh Musikk from the start, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of Timeflies; Cal and Rez are super talented and are a force to be reckoned with when they combine their skills. I usually don’t post promo videos, but The Scotch Tape is for sure to be one of the best mixtapes of the year, up there with Hoodie’s latest drop. Scheduled to be making waves later this summer, this video will get you all revved up; Until then, tune into their #timefliestuesdays videos which are equally as impressive and help you start off the week right.

Good Lorrrrdddd Hoodie!

Right off the bat this is a MUST DOWNLOAD mixtape - It’s legit unreal! After finding huge success off his previous tape, Pep Rally, which was downloaded over 300,000 times, I’d be shocked if Leap Year didn’t surpass that. His growth and development as an artist is so apparent in every rap verse, every hook he sings, every lyric he pens, and the tape as a collective whole. His lyricism is on point, and is definitely a strength of his which stands out among the masses. His clever quips are translated with quick raps or catchy hooks; He also alludes to old school song melodies even if just through one line of a song, or he’ll incorporate a forgotten artist’s lyric effortlessly into his own creating an impressive combination of original songs while keeping it familiar with an old school throwback; As demonstrated in “Can’t Hold Me Down” with, “she’s hangin out the passenger side of her best friend’s ride, tryin just to holler at me…”

This is one of the best, if not the best, mixtape of 2011 that I’ve heard thus far; Redefining the ever-changing hip-pop genre, Steven Markowitz will be left behind (as well as his job at Google) as Hoodie Allen becomes a household name. I give it tops a year, until everyone’s screaming his name. You killed it Hoodie, you deserve it.

ps - I’d also like to note that last week I went on vacation with three other girls and the amount of times we hashtagged #whitegirlproblems in our daily conversations had to have surpassed 100. So needless to say, I minorly freaked when I saw that this was a title to one of his songs. Well played, Hoodie.

The hype is onnn for Hoodie Allen’s new mixtape, Leap Year, set to drop on July 26th, and this song and music video bring it to a whole other level. “The Chase Is On” is so legit it’s hard to believe he’s not famous yet; It looks so professionally done, that I cannot wait to hear the rest of his tape! The song talks about that moment when there’s an instant attraction between two people and is supported through the melody, and incredibly catchy hook. Deff download this or support him on iTunes and buy it here.

Have you ever been listening to the radio when a song comes on and reminds you of a specific memory, and brings you back to that place? It has always amazed us that one lyric, one beat, or one song can make us instantly think of a person, place, or experience that we’ll always remember. We all have songs that remind us of a person we love, a person we lost, someone who broke our hearts, someone who made us laugh, and memories that were created wrapped up in the soul of that song. The purpose of our blog is to deliver the freshest new songs and artists that will hopefully remind you of a specific memory one day, as well as bring back some old school beats that will always be classic. You’ll mostly see new “up and comer’s”, or new tracks from established musicians. You can agree, disagree, love us, hate us, but we simply created this because we are passionate about music, and unlike a lot of uncertainties in life, music will always be there.
